Gas-only for 2026 — Mazda is saving its hybrid CX-5 for the 2027 model year. Naturally aspirated four-cylinder, standard all-wheel drive on every trim (the only one of the three compact-SUV mainstays here that doesn’t offer a front-wheel-drive option). Widely regarded as having the nicest cabin in the segment at this price point: a 12.9-inch center screen, knurled metal controls, and soft-touch materials that outclass its rivals.
Trade-off for that cabin quality and standard AWD: the lowest combined MPG of the three, since there’s no hybrid option this year.
Who it’s for
The CX-5 is the pick for buyers who spend real time in the cabin and notice the difference — commuters who’d rather have soft-touch materials and a quieter interior than the last few mpg. Standard AWD on every trim also makes it the simplest choice for buyers in snow country who don’t want to think about which trim has it. Buyers chasing efficiency above all else should look at the RAV4 instead; those who need more cargo room should look at the CR-V.
